Cecina

The territory of Cecina extends in upper Maremma in front of a stretch of about 10 km coast. Thanks to its particular geographical position, Cecina results to be one of the most desired and famous European tourist destinations.
Known since the Etruscan age, it was also inhabited in Roman time, when the Consul Albinio Cecina, descendant of a family of Etruscan origin, ordered the construction of a villa, whose ruins are still visitable in San Vincenzino area.
The territory had a long decline period, started with the decay of the Etruscan civilisation and was accentuated during the Roman rule. Only towards half of the XIX° century, the reclamation wanted by the Tuscan Grand duke Leopold II changed radically the aspect of the territory, making it cultivable and starting a process of economic development which extended till nowadays.
The town of Cecina was born about 1852, even if of the buildings of that time we have no traces anymore, as the town was completely razed to the ground by the bombs during the second world war.
The sea, the Cecina river, the wide pinewood, the surrounding countryside and the close hills, makes it unique. It has a road and railway junction of considerable importance, and this permitted a strong development in the tertiary sector and in that one of tourist industry, supported, among other things, by very good Hotel facilities.
