The Etruscan coast extends from Leghorn to the promontory of Piombino. It is rocky as far as Castiglioncello becoming then in Cecina and Bibbona an arch of sandy beaches long about 45 km as far as Baratti, where it starts the hill system of Piombino.
This coast is particularly required thanks to its mild climate, the limpid sea, the bathing establishments alternated with wide free littoral spaces.
As soon as we leave the coast, we find immediately gentle hills. The several natural parks in the Calafuria promontory are ideal places for naturalistic itineraries in contact with the numerous animal species, such as The 'Parco dei Poggetti', the 'Padule della Contessa' (Countness' marsh), the fauna refuge Padule di Bolgheri (Bolgheri's marsh).
In the southern part the promontory of Piombino stretches out into the sea forming the enchanting Baratti gulf. The background is ruled by a massive tower at the gulf end: so appears on the horizon Populonia.
Going up to the small village we can admire one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Tuscan coast. Extended on the seaside or gently laid down on the hills in the inland, wrapped by the slow rhythms of the countryside, all centres of the Etruscan coast have something to tell.
The typical dishes of these zones are the cacciucco alla Livornese 'fish soup' and the cinghiale dolce forte 'strong-sweet wild boar'. Around Bolgheri are produced some of the most renowned wines of the world.
